Albacore Tuna Fishing Job Opportunity

This tuna fishing job has been filled and the 2009 albacore season is now over.

Fishing albacore tuna aboard the Canadian Tuna Fishing Vessel, Sun Odyssey

Canadian crewman needed for the 2009 Albacore tuna fishing season in the Northeast Pacific Ocean from June 15th to October 31st.

This opportunity is most suitable for single, younger men in exceptional physical condition who are non-smokers, drinkers or drug users.

This is a high demanding job requiring you to be available without the possibility of time off for the complete season.

As our fishery is conducted up to 300 miles offshore, we are susceptible to severe weather and ocean conditions. Lack of sleep, hard work and harsh conditions are the norm rather than the exception. Ocean going experience on smaller vessels (under 100 feet) is required.

As we often enter US harbours, you must not have a criminal record and must have a valid Canadian passport and a valid Canadian commercial fishing license. It is a possibility that we won't return to Canada until the completion of the season.

Preference will be given to those with valid Marine Emergency Duties Certificates, Marine Radio Operators Certificates and First Aid Certificates. Diesel mechanic and marine equipment experience would also be a tremendous asset.

Duties

  • Preparation of vessel before the season begins.
  • Regular and ongoing in season maintenance of vessel.
  • Catching and processing of albacore tuna.
  • Working in the freezer at temperatures of -40 F.
  • Regular watches and wheel turns.
  • Preparation of meals and galley duties.
  • Anything else the skipper asks of you.

Our Vessel

The 50ft fiberglass vessel, Sun Odyssey, was built by Philbrooks Marine of Vancouver BC in 1979 and now winters in Ladysmith BC. It underwent a major refit from 2006-2007 to allow it to enter the albacore tuna fishery for the first time in July of 2007.

She received her Canadian Steamship Inspection certificate in July of 2007 and was equipped with new electronics and machinery to enable her to become a serious and competitive fisher.

The vessel is powered by an 8LXB Gardner diesel engine and has a 4 cylinder Kabota diesel powering the refrigeration system.

There are 2 radar systems, several navigation systems, marine radios, satellite weather and ocean imaging systems, satellite phone, email and Internet. All lifesaving equipment meets required standards and is up to date.

We have the capability of freezing in excess of 4000 pounds of fish per day and can hold 32,000 pounds before we need to offload.

Offloading will be done at the most convenient times and locations taking into consideration the various available markets and conditions.

The skipper, Ken Bryski, has been fishing albacore tuna since 1972 and has skippered many successful and competitive fishing vessels since 1976. We belong to a group of other very serious and competitive tuna vessels who share fishing information and provide a measure of safety when operating far off shore.

Wages

You will be paid on a share basis from the catch by whatever company we sell our fish to. Bonuses will be paid to those who complete the season without causing loss of fishing opportunities and will be commensurate with effort expended and experience.
