Ken Bryski's Guide to Starting an Online Business

How I Became an Internet Marketer

by Ken Bryski
(I'm always where ever I want to be...how about you?)

I sure never intended to become an Internet marketer. When I first heard about the Internet I was naturally curious. Electronics and information were a big part of my every day life as a commercial fisherman.

Even though I had never used a personal computer for anything, I understood the value of having good computer systems and knowing how to use them to an advantage.

I'll give you an example. Around 1995 we had a huge run of sockeye and the salmon trollers had a real good shot at them on the north end of Vancouver Island. I had just put on a new navigation charting system which not many others had yet.

Early in the season I was fishing at the mouth of Bates Pass, next to Nigei Island. Every time I cut close to the mouth of the pass I would get fish. Soon others noticed and the corner going into the pass got pretty crowded. It was a good place to fish but there was lots of competition. But I had my charting system with the GPS system we had just gotten access to.

So, I held my breath and went into the narrow pass. Right away the tide pushed me onto the rocks where the shallows came up much faster than I realized. I marked the spot on the plotter and got out of there, only losing two of my steel lines and all the gear on them.

But, I turned right around after straightening out the gear and when back in because I had valuable information about where the most dangerous rocks in the pass were.

I would travel deep into the pass and then out to where I could see all the other guys fighting for the corner. I got fish the whole way in and out with nobody in my way and because I was the first one in, I had lots of opportunity to chart the area with my new system. I soon discovered that the fish were crawling right up the shoreline and that's where the majority were.

Soon others came in when they saw I wasn't coming back out. Then more boats came in when they realized we were catching fish. I just kept shallowing my gear making sure I continued to be the boat closest to the beach. That season I ended up tripling the average catch because I had valuable equipment and I was willing to learn how to use it beyond the basics to my advantage.

When I discovered the Internet and the information it contained, I immediately understood its value to all of us. As I explained above, information is valuable and all of a sudden I had more information than any of us ordinary people ever had access to before. I immediately realized that understanding how this all works would be to my advantage one way or another. All I had to do was figure it all out...becoming an Internet marketer was just not on my radar screen. Back then, I still hadn't heard of the term...
